Happy New Year!
And now, the first of this year's Anno Astra technical gobbledygook...
Vanguard Heavy Assault Hardsuit
Manufactured by Solstice Defense, the Model 80 Vanguard is representative of heavy, unpowered hardsuits designed for mission profiles where protection for the wearer in a combat environment is the primary concern.
The Model 80 is a fully enclosed, NBC- and vacuum-rated suit of armour built mostly out of articulated rigid plates. The plates are a laminate of cermet composites and ablative materials built around a CNT core, sufficiently strong & thick enough to resist point-blank coilgun fire and anti-personnel laser pulses repeatedly before repair or replacement is required. A bodysuit, worn underneath the rigid plates, is woven out of ballistic polyamides mixed with a rapid-expansion silicate ablative that doubles as a shear-thickening fluid. This combination gives it dynamic/inertial armour properties, turning the bodysuit into an effective blunt trauma plate & anti-spall liner.
The main components of the life-support/temperature regulation system are integrated into the bodysuit. This gives the wearer a comfortable operating environment for up to 12 hours with the standard equipment fit. The helmet has an extensive battery of LOH-milspec sensors and enough built-in processing power to support a standard combat AI & present the wearer with a fully synthetic, real-time 3-D environment projected directly onto the wearers retinas. Also built into the helmet and cuirass pieces is a communications & telemetry suite, for secure inter- and intra-squad communications conforming to the most common standards.
All this comes at a price. While cheaper than a powered shell with similar features and protection levels, the suits mass, averaging at about 50 kg., makes it a burden for all but the strongest of Earth-standard normals. In spite of being evenly distributed over the wearers body, the unsupported weight and added inertia makes it unwieldy & tiring to use for extended periods of time, causing a sharp drop in the wearers combat performance in as short a time as ten minutes. Because of these reasons, many feel that the lower costs do not justify the purchase of these suits in lieu of powered armor. Sales of these & similar suits have been brisk, though, in polities known to have aggressive, well-supported eugenics programs.
